John Stott: A Summary of his Teaching

Ted Schroder

This year is the centenary of the birth of John Stott whose books continue to influence thousands of Christians throughout the world. While several biographies have been written about him no one has undertaken to compile a balanced exposition of his thought and teaching. Since I retired from public ministry I decided to read all his published work and organize it into subjects to make it accessible for the benefit of those who labor in congregational ministry and others who wish to deepen their understanding of the Gospel. The result John Stott: A Summary of his Teaching has been published by Piquant editions in the UK and is now available in the USA online by Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Target, Book Depository and other outlets.

I first met John Stott in 1964 when I was a student at Cranmer Hall, Durham University and he invited me to be his curate at All Souls Church, Langham Place, London in 1967. His was the greatest influence on my life and 51 years of ministry. By categorizing his thought under separate subjects I hoped to provide a reliable resource for busy pastors and teachers for the benefit of their own lives and to enrich their communication of the Gospel. I have also developed a study guide for those who wish to use it as a book study in a class. I will be using it myself in a fifteen-week class in the new year. If anyone is interested I would be glad to share it with them. It can be accessed on my blog

Since I first served in this diocese from 1976, and as Rector of Grace Church, Orange Park, I made complimentary copies of the book available to all clergy who attended the last Synod.

This book is a treasure trove! Few people will have had the time or opportunity to read as many of John Stott’s works as has Ted Schroder who, as Stott’s curate, was trained by him, and subsequently mentored by him as part of a life-long friendship. His clear summary of all the major aspects of Stott’s preaching and teaching will inspire others to find out more, and to discover the depth and breadth of Stott’s remarkable ministry, a ministry rooted in the Word of God and lived solely for His Glory. This is a book not only for theological colleges, but for every Christian who wishes to grow in faith and commitment to Christ.
